The history of Maiko Hotel

更新日:2015/09/29
Originally built in 1919 by a shipping tycoon, the beautiful Maiko Hotel has witnessed the salt breeze and nature of Maiko for nearly 100 years.

Maiko Hotel is situated close to Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, and only minutes away from Japan’s only Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall. Upon passing through the hotel’s gates and entering the grounds, visitors find themselves enveloped in a silence entirely separate from the hustle and bustle of the outside world. Continuing through the front garden, with only the sounds of birds, and the crunch of gravel underfoot, the Western-style hall, its white bricks glittering in the sunlight, reveals itself from amongst the trees. Its elegant form, surrounded by the blue sky and lush greenery of the gardens, is a sight to behold.

The hotel itself was constructed in 1919 at the request of Kyutaro Kusakabe, a shipping tycoon, as a reception hall to entertain important guests. A great deal of money was spent on the construction, which used the finest techniques and materials available at the time.

Maiko Hotel, which featured in director Takeshi Kitano’s (a.k.a Beat Takeshi) film “Beyond Outrage”, has expansive grounds of approximately 16.5km2, with the Western-style hall acting as their entrance. Behind the Western-style hall is the elaborately decorated Japanese-style hall, built in the style of a tea-ceremony house, along with a large reception hall and the “Kiri-no-ma” room, which originally functioned as a library. The wedding venue, which was originally a storehouse, can also be found here.

Crossing through the courtyard, with its colors that change with the four seasons, and continuing along the traditionally styled undercover passage, you can find the “Shin-kan” (new hall), with a variety of individual rooms. The hall features weaved, coffered ceilings, and “tsuru-no-ranma”– intricate transoms carved from a single plank of wood. The Japanese gardens, designed by the charismatic Taisho-era gardener “Jihei Ogawa”, can be seen expanding outwards from the large, luxurious windows situated on its south and west sides.

At the restaurant overlooking the gardens you can enjoy Italian cuisine made with fresh seafood caught from the Akashi strait, and with a variety of other locally produced, seasonal ingredients. The restaurant incorporates Japanese-style elements into its cuisine that can be eaten with chopsticks, and has become popular amongst customers who appreciate meals that have been prepared with time and care at each stage of preparation.

Maiko Hotel is also very popular as a venue for wedding receptions, with its gardens – which are available for use during the ceremony itself – and its charming combination of east and west architecture that was created through the best possible techniques available at the time of construction. Due to the hotel’s long history, it has been loved as a wedding venue by people across generations. Some of our guests have mothers, and even grandmothers, who also celebrated their weddings there.

Maiko Hotel is in an ideal location, situated at the gateway to both Awaji Island and Shikoku. The Maiko Marine Promenade and Akashi Kaikyo Bridge Exhibition Center can be found close by, along with the aforementioned Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall. There are also a variety of other tourist attractions in the vicinity, with the Marine Pia Kobe outlet mall and the Akashi Uonotana Fish Market only a 10-minute drive away.

We would be honored to be included in your travel itinerary.
